The new cutting-edge 250,000 SF Campus Recreation Center at the University of Cincinnati is a magnificent and uniquely shaped building consisting of five separate entities: athletic core, six electronic classrooms, student housing, restaurants and dining, and stadium grandstands.
The world-class swimming pool, designed by Counsilman-Hunsaker, in association with KZF, Inc., includes:
50-meter, eight-lane Olympic-sized pool
• Moveable bulkhead
• Springboard diving
3,150 SF leisure pool
• Lazy river
• Water wall
• Over-sized whirlpool spa
• Bubble couch
Other programming spaces include a 112-suite upperclassmen residence hall, located in the center of the building. The muscular athletic core of the building includes eight racquetball courts; six-court basketball arena; 40-foot climbing wall; 17,000 SF fitness and weight area with more than 200 cardio and fitness machines and 10,000 pounds of free weights as well as a cardio theater with eight plasma TVs; mid-air, suspended four-lane jogging track; warm-up/stretch areas; and three multi-purpose rooms.
With its extraordinary design, the facility received the 2007 ‘Innovative Architecture’ design award from Recreation Management magazine. Plus was featured on the October 2006 cover of Architectural Record magazine and in 2006 received the ‘Buildings of America’ prestigious award as one of the ‘50 Best New Construction Designs within the Ohio Region.’
