| Description: |
The five story Children’s Specialized Hospital includes four above grade floors and one below grade that offers a child-focused natatorium based on a combination of design elements, ultimately inspired by the rehabilitative needs of children.
Counsilman-Hunsaker and HKS Architects, Inc. designed the kid-friendly 800 sq. ft. shallow water, slip-resistant therapy pool with a ceiling track patient lift system, ramp entry, and an underwater shelf for sitting. In addition to a programmable chemical automation system, the pool water is routinely monitored and treated by UV sterilization to kill bacteria, viruses, molds and their spores, and to continuously remove chloramines.
The welcoming aquatic therapy area uses a combination of well-being and aesthetic amenities. Since patients typically perform better in environments with daylight, the pool is below grade, yet includes the use of skylights and light wells that provide generous amounts of natural light. Another inspiring design feature to increase good mood and physical energy is the use of colorful tiles surrounding the wheelchair-accessible pool.
